Flemington and General Storage Information

Flemington is a small inner suburb of Melbourne, located 4 km northwest of the central business district. At the 2016 census, it had a population of 7,719. Its local government areas are the cities of Melbourne and Moonee Valley.

The sprawling suburb has been part Melbourne’s landscape since 1839 and it is situated between Moonee Ponds Creek and the Maribyrnong River. It was named by James Watson after the Flemington Estate in Scotland. Others claim that the origin of Flemington’s name relates to Robert Fleming, a Brunswick resident who owned land alongside the Saltwater River and ran a butchery there.

Flemington is renowned for the Melbourne Cup which is Australia’s most popular annual Thoroughbred horse race. It’s a 3200-metre race organized by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
