Travancore and General Storage Information

Travancore is an inner-city suburb in Melbourne, located 5 kilometres northwest of the city’s Central Business District. At the 2021 census, it recorded a population of 2,116. Its local government area is the City of Moonee Valley.

This unique pocket is situated between Mount Alexander Road and the Tullamarine Freeway, south of Ormond Road, but the northernmost section is still incorrectly known as Ascot Vale. Travancore took its name from the Travancore Mansion and Estate, a property owned by Henry Madden. He bought it in 1906 from the relatives of Hugh Glass, and renamed it.

Madden is known for exporting horses to India; hence the property was named after the former Indian kingdom of Travancore. When the land surrounding the Travancore Mansion was subdivided in the 1920s, many of the streets were given distinctly Indian names, such as Baroda Street, Bengal Street, Cashmere Street, Lucknow Street, and Madura Street.

The Travancore Mansion was eventually acquired by the Victorian Government and was converted to a special education school. It was demolished in the 1940s and the area is currently occupied by the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Mental Health.

Travancore is best known for its Art Deco-influenced homes that give the suburb a unique architectural flavor. Being only 5 kilometres away from Melbourne’s CBD, it has seen transformation in recent years, following a fire that gutted the Lombard Paper Factory. The factory site is now occupied by residential buildings that flank the suburb on its southern section.
