Prahran and General Storage Information

Prahran is an inner suburb of Melbourne in the state of Victoria, located 5 km southeast of the city’s Central Business District. At the 2021 census, it recorded a population of 12,203. Its local government area is the City of Stonnington.

Prahran derived its name from Pur-ra-ran which is a Boonwurrung word thought to mean ‘land that’s partially surrounded by water’. When naming started, the suburb’s spelling was meant to be Praharan, but a spelling error on a government form led to the name Prahran.

This bustling suburb is bordered on the north by South Yarra and Toorak, on the south by St Kilda East and Windsor, on the east by Armadale, and on the west by South Melbourne.

Prahran forms part of Greater Melbourne, within easy reach of the beach, bars, upscale restaurants and shopping centres. Chapel Street is a blend of chic cafes and fashion boutiques. Greville Street, once the hub of the hippie community in Melbourne, features an array of bookstores, restos, pubs, clothing and music shops.
