St Kilda and General Storage Information
St Kilda is an inner seaside suburb in Melbourne, located 6 kilometres southeast of the city's Central Business District. At the 2021 census, it recorded a population of 19,490. Its local government area is the City of Port Phillip.
This gem of a suburb was named by Charles La Trobe after a schooner, Lady of St Kilda, which moored at the beach in 1842. During the Victorian era, the suburb became a preferred spot among Melbourne's elite, and a number of luxurious mansions and palatial terraces were built along its hills and waterfront.
In the early 1900s, the St Kilda foreshore became the favoured recreational destination+ among Melburnians, with electric tram lines connecting the suburb to the seaside amusement rides, ballrooms, cafes and theatres. Many of the aforementioned mansions and terraces were converted to guest houses, while gardens and open spaces were occupied by apartment buildings. St Kilda ultimately became Melbourne’s most densely populated suburb.
After World War II, St Kilda became the red-light district of Melbourne and by the late 1960s, it developed a culture of bohemianism, drawing popular artists and musicians. By the turn of the millennium, the suburb saw rapid gentrification due to its proximity to the CBD, and many lower socio-economic groups were pushed out to other areas.
St Kilda is known as Melbourne’s seaside playground and it is home to many of the city’s tourist attractions including the Palais Theatre, the Esplanade Hotel, Luna Park, and St Kilda Pier to name a few. Being just a stone’s throw away from the city centre, its beach, parks and a wide range of chic bars and restaurants make it a popular hotspot.
